Overview: Dance Classes
Your kid wants to dance, or you do, and the studio down the street teaches a handful of styles and puts on a recital when the season ends. Most neighbourhood studios in Canada run like that. Classes follow the school year, younger children take ballet, tap and jazz, and a competition team fills the weekends.
In January the lobby is a sea of snow boots, and the costs start arriving soon after. Costumes, tickets and a performance fee usually sit on top of tuition. Ask about all of them when you register, not in the spring.
Quebec gives families real room if dance stops working out. You can cancel a dance school registration at any time. Before classes start it costs nothing, and after that the school can keep only what you've used plus a small penalty set by law.

What affects the total?

Frequently asked questions
Do Canadian studios teach to a dance exam syllabus?
Some do, and many don't. The Royal Academy of Dance runs its ballet exams in Canada, and only a teacher with RAD Registered Teacher status can enter a student. If exams matter to you, ask whether the teacher holds that status. If your child just loves to move, a studio with its own syllabus can be every bit as good.
What should I ask about the recital?
Whether it's optional, what the costume costs and who picks it, whether tickets are extra, and how many rehearsals fall outside class time. Get it all in writing when you register. In Quebec, if the school sells you gear such as dance shoes above a modest amount, that sale needs its own written contract, and you can cancel it within ten days of delivery or the start of classes.
Can we claim a tax credit for children's dance classes?
In Manitoba, possibly. The province has a children's arts and cultural activity tax credit, and performing arts are on its list of eligible activities. It's for younger children and goes on your Manitoba tax return. Families in other provinces should look up their own province's credits before counting on one. Keep the studio's receipts either way.
Can an adult start with no experience?
Yes, and many studios run adult beginner classes on weeknights. Look for one labelled beginner, run as a session rather than drop-in, with a teacher who teaches adults often. If you sign a prepaid contract in Ontario, you have ten days after you get your copy to change your mind, unless the studio is a non-profit. Keep that copy somewhere you'll find it.
How do I judge a studio in one visit?
Watch a class if they let you. Is every child moving, or is half the room waiting? Is the floor sprung, or vinyl over concrete? In winter, look at the entrance too. A studio with boot trays, hooks for wet coats and a firm rule about outdoor shoes is protecting the floor your child jumps on. Then listen to the parents waiting. Happy ones talk.
What should I ask about supervision backstage?
Who stays with the children in the dressing rooms, whether they're staff or volunteer parents, the rule on phones backstage, and how each child is signed out after the show. For adults in a position of trust with children, the studio decides whether to ask for a vulnerable sector check. The check usually goes through the local police where that adult lives. Ask which helpers have one.
