Graded exams or open classes?
Exams give a child a clear ladder and an outside examiner, at the cost of entry fees and a term shaped around exam day. In Canada, ask whether the teacher is a RAD Registered Teacher, since only they can enter students for Royal Academy of Dance exams. Open classes suit children who dance for joy and dread being assessed. Either way, ask how the school decides who moves up.
Is there a tax credit for children's ballet classes?
In Manitoba, there can be. The Children's Arts and Cultural Activity Tax Credit covers eligible programs in the performing arts for children, and you claim it on the Manitoba return. If you live elsewhere, look up your own province's credits before counting on anything. Wherever you are, ask the school for a receipt that shows the child's name, the program and what you paid.
Can we get money back if ballet stops working out?
That depends on the province. Quebec lets you cancel a dance school registration whenever you like. Nothing is owed before classes begin. After that, you pay for classes used plus a small penalty the law caps. In Ontario, prepaid contracts with for-profit studios come with ten days to cancel once you get your copy. Keep that copy somewhere safe.
Can an adult begin from nothing?
Yes. Look for a class labelled adult beginner, where you'll learn the same vocabulary children do, minus the exams. For older adults, Canada's National Ballet School runs Sharing Dance, low-impact dance classes offered through community partners and online. Expect turnout to take the longest. Most adult rooms are friendlier than people fear, and nobody minds a modest arabesque.
How should a teacher handle hands-on correction?
By asking first, saying what they'll adjust and keeping it brief. Nudging a foot or a shoulder is normal ballet teaching. Remarks about a child's body or weight aren't. Ask for the school's policy, and whether teachers have a vulnerable sector check, which the school decides to require and the teacher applies for through the police. A school that has thought about this answers quickly.
