Frequently asked questions
Can we cancel a gymnastics registration partway through?
Often, yes. In Quebec, consumer rules for sports courses let you cancel at any time. Before classes start, the club can't charge you anything. After that, it keeps what you've used plus a small penalty the law caps. In Ontario, a prepaid contract with a for-profit club gives you ten days to cancel once you have your copy. That rule doesn't cover not-for-profit clubs, so ask which kind yours is.
Recreational class or competitive squad?
Recreational is a weekly class and the next CanGym badge. The competitive stream is a household decision. Training runs most days, meets mean driving to other cities in February, and weekends belong to the gym. Ask how selection works, what the season costs in time and travel, and how a child steps back to recreational if the fun runs out. A good club makes that step easy.
How do a club's levels actually work?
At many clubs, through CanGym. Gymnastics Canada built it as a national skill program, with coloured badges grouped into bronze, silver and gold levels. A child earns a badge by mastering its skills, so two kids the same age can be on different badges. Clubs that don't use CanGym run their own ladder. Either way, ask what your child is working on now and what moves them up.
Can we claim gymnastics fees on our taxes?
In Manitoba, possibly. The province's Fitness Tax Credit covers fitness activities for children and young adults, and a supervised gymnastics program can qualify. It goes on your Manitoba tax return. Families in other provinces should check their own province's credits before counting on one. Wherever you live, ask the club for a proper receipt when you pay, and keep it with your tax papers.
Who is allowed to spot my child?
Only coaches trained to do it. Spotting puts a coach's hands on a child's hips or back mid-skill, so ask who on staff is certified and whether an assistant ever runs a group alone. Gymnastics Ontario requires untrained coaches to work under a qualified coach's direct supervision. Anyone coaching kids should have a vulnerable sector check, which the club asks for and the coach usually gets through the police where they live.
Is my child insured at a gymnastics club in Ontario?
If the club belongs to Gymnastics Ontario and your child is a registered member, its insurance covers sanctioned gymnastics. A child can try a few promotional sessions, like a bring-a-friend day, before registering, as long as the club keeps their name on file. Birthday party guests who aren't members don't get sport accident insurance. If the club isn't a member at all, ask what insurance it carries.
