Your voice is the one instrument you can't put back in a case. A teacher hears what you can't from inside your own head, which is why so many studios ask you to record lessons and listen back.
Training splits two ways. Classical teachers build an unamplified sound through vowels, resonance and repertoire. Contemporary and musical theatre teachers work on belt, mix and the microphone. Ask which world a teacher came up in.
Plenty of Canadian students sing through the Royal Conservatory of Music's graded exams. In Ontario, passing the RCM's higher practical and theory levels can count toward high school music credits, and voice counts as a practical subject. Quebec's consumer rules cover private music schools, so you can cancel a course registration there at any time.

Frequently asked questions
Can singing lessons earn high school credits in Ontario?
Yes, through graded exams taken outside school. Ontario awards senior music credits toward the diploma for set practical and theory levels with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada, Quebec conservatories and some British boards. Voice counts as a practical subject. The credit mark is the average of the practical and theory results. Ask the school's guidance office how to hand in certificates.
Can we cancel singing lessons partway through in Quebec?
Yes. Quebec's consumer rules cover private music schools, and you can cancel a course registration at any time. Before lessons start, the school can't charge you. After that, you pay for lessons already given plus a small penalty the law caps. Cancel with the form in your contract or a written notice, and the law gives the school a short deadline to refund anything owed.
Who can treat a singer's voice problem in Ontario?
Start with your family doctor, who can send you to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Voice therapy itself is often done by a speech-language pathologist. In Ontario that title is protected, and only people registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario can use it. The college's public register lets you check. Diagnosis isn't a voice teacher's job.
Why do lessons spend so long on breathing?
Because every phrase rides on it. Run out of air and you squeeze the note from your throat, which is how singers end up sore after rehearsal. Support work teaches the ribs and middle to control how slowly the air leaves. Canadian winters add a practical twist: dry indoor heat is hard on the throat, so drink water and don't let your practice room get parched.
When is a hoarse voice a reason to stop?
When it's still rough after the cold has cleared, when your speaking voice tires by afternoon, or when easy notes quietly vanish. Rest it first. If it doesn't come back, book your family doctor rather than extra lessons, and ask whether a specialist should take a look. A good teacher will tell you to go, and won't take it personally.
Is hands-on breathing work normal with a young singer?
Some teachers place a hand on the ribs or back to show what support feels like. It should be explained, asked for every time and never done with a child unless a parent is present. Ask whether teachers who work with minors have a vulnerable sector check. The studio decides whether a role needs one, and the teacher applies for it through local police.
