Frequently asked questions

How do I get an official golf handicap?

Through Golf Canada. You can join a club affiliated with it, or sign up for its Public Player program if you play different courses without a home club. Either way, you post your scores and Golf Canada works out your Handicap Index. Scores from a Canadian course only count during that province's active season, which in most provinces ends with October. A coach can't issue a handicap, but a good one can help you cut it.

What does Class A mean on a golf pro's bio?

It means full membership in the PGA of Canada. A Class A pro has finished the association's Training Academy and spent a long stretch working in the golf industry. That's a professional standard for the whole business, from the shop to the lesson tee. For lessons, look for a Class A specialization in teaching or coaching. It's optional, it needs renewing, and it tells you instruction is what they actually focus on.

Can I get out of a lesson package I've prepaid?

Often, if you act quickly. In Ontario, a prepaid contract with a for-profit sports club usually comes with ten days to cancel, counted from when you get the written copy. Municipal courses and member-owned clubs fall outside that rule. In Quebec, you can cancel a course registration at any time. Once lessons start, you pay for the ones you've had plus a small capped penalty. Cancel in writing either way.

Does a lesson give me access to the course?

No. A lesson pays for the coach, and usually the bay and the range balls. Tee times are a separate booking. At a private club, a playing lesson often needs a member or the head pro to arrange guest access. Public and municipal courses are simpler, since anyone can book a tee time, but the coach may still need the course's permission to teach there. Settle who books before the day.

Is my child ever alone in a teaching bay?

Ask, because a teaching bay is a small room, often with a door and no view of the range. Ask whether you can stay and whether junior lessons run in groups. The Coaching Association of Canada promotes the Rule of Two, which keeps coaching in open, observable settings. It's a leading practice, not a law. The club decides whether its coaches need a vulnerable sector check, so ask if they've had one.

Are indoor simulator lessons any use in winter?

Here they're most of the teaching year, and for swing work they're worth it. A simulator gives the coach club and ball data in a heated room, and it's honest about contact and path. What it can't give you is wind, a soft spring lie or a shot with something riding on it. Book a playing lesson soon after the courses open, before a whole winter of mat swings turns into habit.
