Math in Canada follows your province. Each one writes its own curriculum and sets its own assessments. In BC, for example, students write a provincial numeracy assessment to graduate, and it tests how they apply math to problems rather than one course. A tutor who knows your province's expectations won't waste sessions on the wrong material.

Frequently asked questions
Should a math tutor be a certified teacher?
It helps, though certification alone won't make someone a good tutor. In Ontario, certified teachers answer to the Ontario College of Teachers, and its free public register shows whether a person is certified, what they're qualified to teach and any discipline history. Plenty of strong tutors are university students or engineers instead. Whoever you pick, ask what they've taught, and to whom.
How will I know whether it is helping?
Don't judge it on one test, since a single mark swings with nerves and luck. Watch whether your child can explain a method out loud and whether homework fights get shorter. Compare the tutor's view of the gap with the teacher's comments on the next report card. Ask for a quick written note after each session, and treat a tutor who can't say what they covered as a warning.
Does tutoring over video actually work?
For most students, yes, and it's a real help in winter or outside the big cities, where the tutor who knows your course might live hours away. It works when both sides share a digital whiteboard, the room is quiet, and the device isn't also a game console. Younger children drift faster on screen. A reluctant student often does better in person at first.
What should happen in the first session?
Mostly questions. A good tutor looks at recent tests, asks the student to talk through a problem they got wrong, and finds the spot where the reasoning breaks. Expect them to check the work against your province's curriculum for that grade, since topics don't land in the same year everywhere. Fractions and word problems often turn out to be the real trouble, even for a student in calculus.
Is exam prep different from regular tutoring?
Yes, and mixing them up wastes money. Exam prep teaches timing, formats and the habits of one particular test. Subject tutoring rebuilds the math underneath. BC's graduation numeracy assessment shows why it matters. It asks students to apply math to real problems rather than repeat one course, and they can write it again to improve their result. A student who panics needs prep. One who can't do the questions needs tutoring.
What do I ask before a tutor comes to the house?
Ask who's coming, what checks they've had, and whether an adult will be home. The same care applies to video lessons with a minor. A tutoring company decides whether its tutors need a vulnerable sector check, and each tutor applies through the local police, or the Criminal Records Review Program in British Columbia. With an independent tutor, ask whether they hold a recent one.
