A kid who can't sit still. An adult who wants to feel less breakable. A teenager who watched one fight online and got ideas. Martial arts gyms take all of them, and one real class tells you more than any website.

Canada has a national coaching standard, and it's worth asking about. Judo Canada trains its coaches through the National Coaching Certification Program, which it runs with the Coaching Association of Canada. Other arts vary a lot, so ask what coaching training the person on the mat has had. Plenty of good clubs rent a community centre gym on set evenings, with mats that live in a storage room.

Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a martial arts contract partway through?
In Quebec, yes, at any time. Cancel before classes start and the school can't charge you anything. After that it can keep the cost of the classes you've taken, plus a small penalty the law caps. In Ontario, you get ten days to cancel a prepaid contract after you receive the written copy, as long as the club isn't a non-profit. Either way, cancel in writing.
Who will actually be teaching my class?
Ask by name, then ask what coaching training that person has. Many gyms list the founder and a long rank list online, then hand beginners to a senior student. That can work well. In judo, NCCP status sits in the Coaching Association of Canada's database, called the Locker, and it lapses without ongoing training. So a head coach should be able to tell you whether theirs is current.
What does a belt actually record?
What you covered inside one style and one organization. In judo, the coloured belts below black are graded by clubs. Black belt ranks go through provincial grading committees and Judo Canada. Other arts vary widely, and some clubs grade entirely in house. Before you pay for a grading, ask who signs the certificate and whether a club in another province would recognize it.
Do consumer rules cover martial arts classes at a community centre?
Not always. Quebec's consumer rules for courses don't cover programs a city's recreation service runs itself. Classes taught there by independent instructors are covered, though. So before you sign up, find out who you're actually paying, the city or the instructor. The answer decides which cancellation rules protect you if the class isn't working out.
What checks apply to instructors who teach children?
Anyone leading a youth class should have a vulnerable sector check. The club decides the role needs one, and the instructor applies through the police where they live. Then ask how the club handles the Rule of Two, which aims to keep a coach from ever being alone with a young athlete. Ask where parents can watch, and who supervises the changing area.
