Can art class fees count toward a tax credit?
In Manitoba, they can. The federal children's arts credit ended years ago. Manitoba still has a non-refundable credit for children's artistic and cultural programs, and visual arts are on its list. It only reduces Manitoba tax you'd otherwise owe. Keep a receipt showing your child's name and what you paid, and look for any credit in your own province's tax package.
What materials does the school supply?
It varies more than anything else on a booking page. Some studios supply easels, boards and a shared shelf of paint. Others send a list and expect you to buy the lot. In Quebec, a supplies kit worth more than a modest sum that you buy from the school with a course is tied to your registration. Cancel the course early on and you can cancel the kit too, returning it within ten days.
Can I cancel an art course after it has started?
In Quebec, yes, at any time. Consumer law covers series of classes from private schools. Before the first class you owe nothing, and after it you pay for the classes held plus a small penalty the law caps. Courses a city recreation service runs itself aren't covered, though classes an independent school runs as part of a city program are. In other provinces, read the school's own terms before paying for a whole session.
What actually happens in a life drawing session?
A model holds a series of poses, quick ones to loosen everyone up and longer ones after the break. In a tutored session, a teacher moves around the room fixing proportion and showing you how to measure. An open studio gives you the model, a timer and silence. Many sessions here are run by art societies or artist-run centres rather than schools, and most are for adults only.
How are teenage students kept clear of life drawing?
Ask the school straight out. A careful school keeps model sessions for adults, says so when you book, and never runs a youth class in that room at the same time. Ask whether a second adult stays with young students. The school decides whether teachers need a vulnerable sector check.
