Overview: Karate Classes
Somebody in your house wants to try karate, and every dojo sign in town names a different style. Shotokan trains long, low stances. Goju-ryu works up close with circular blocks. Kyokushin hits the body hard. At the start the teacher matters more than the name, but the style still shapes what a Tuesday night feels like.
Sport karate in Canada runs through Karate Canada and its provincial associations, such as Karate BC and Karate Ontario. An affiliated dojo can put students into sanctioned kata and kumite events, and most provincial associations include some accident insurance for registrants. Karate BC goes further and requires the chief instructor of each affiliated dojo to hold NCCP coaching certification. Plenty of traditional dojos stay independent and teach well, so ask which kind you're looking at.
Classes are sold by the month, the term or the season, and the rules on prepaid lessons change from province to province. Ask how you leave before you ask how you join.

Cost of karate classes in Canada

Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel karate lessons I've already paid for?
Often, yes. Quebec's consumer law lets you cancel a series of martial arts classes at any time. Before the first class you owe nothing. After it, you pay for the classes taken plus a small penalty the law caps. In Ontario, a prepaid contract with a for-profit club can be cancelled within ten days of receiving your written copy. Send the notice in writing and keep proof.
What does a provincial karate association add?
Mostly competition and some protection. Registering through an affiliated dojo opens the door to sanctioned kata and kumite events, from local tournaments up to nationals. Most provincial karate associations also include some accident insurance for registrants. In BC, the association wants NCCP certification from each dojo's chief instructor and a criminal record check from its instructors. Ask the dojo whether registration is in the fee or billed on top.
How much contact is there in class?
That depends on the style and the dojo, so ask before you sign up. In point sparring, each exchange stops once a technique scores. Knockdown styles land hard body shots but keep punches off the face. Many clubs sit in between, with gloves and light contact. If your child starts competing in Ontario, amateur karate events there must be sanctioned by Karate Ontario or the Ontario Athletics Commission.
Does my child's dojo follow the Rule of Two?
Ask, because it's a coaching practice rather than a law. The Coaching Association of Canada's Rule of Two means another responsible adult is always present, so a coach is never alone with a child out of sight and earshot. Many sport organizations have pledged to follow it. In a dojo it covers private lessons, change rooms and text messages. Ask how this one handles each.
Who is checked before teaching a children's karate class?
Anyone who teaches or partners juniors, senior students included. The dojo decides whether a role calls for a vulnerable sector check, which adds a search for pardoned sexual offences to a regular police check. The instructor applies through the local police, or through the Criminal Records Review Program in British Columbia. Karate BC requires one from anyone coaching youth. Ask when the check was last done.
