Overview: Kickboxing Classes
Kickboxing gyms often run two programs under one sign. The fitness class works pads and bags in timed rounds, and nobody throws anything back. The fight side spars most weeks and gets people ready for amateur bouts. Muay thai usually shares the timetable, adding the clinch, knees and elbows, and a long, slow toughening of the shins.
Ask which program a beginner class belongs to before you pay. If the gym talks about fights, ask who sanctions them. In Canada that's a provincial question, and the answer tells you whether the gym's competitors fight on proper cards.
Contracts deserve the same attention. Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec each treat prepaid memberships differently. A gym that explains its cancellation terms plainly is showing you how it treats members.
Our listings show what each gym states on its own website, including the classes and styles it offers. The province and city lists below lead to kickboxing and muay thai gyms in your area.

Choose the training style and number of weekly visits first. Fitness kickboxing, technical classes and Muay Thai can have different equipment needs, booking rules and membership options.

Kickboxing and Muay Thai programs differ in contact level and equipment requirements. Check the regular renewal price after any trial.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get out of a kickboxing membership after signing?
Often, if you move quickly. Ontario gives you ten days from receiving the written contract to cancel a prepaid membership with a for-profit gym. British Columbia gives you ten days on most fitness contracts too. In Quebec, classes sold as a martial arts course can be cancelled at any time, paying for what you've used plus a capped penalty. Whatever the province, cancel in writing.
Who oversees amateur kickboxing and muay thai fights?
The rules are set province by province. In Ontario, every amateur kickboxing or muay thai contest needs sanctioning from the Ontario Athletics Commission or from Kickboxing Ontario or Muay Thai Ontario, the sport bodies the province recognizes. A gym connected to that system can put you on a sanctioned card. Elsewhere, ask your coach who sanctions the events their fighters enter.
Do kickboxing fees count toward any tax credit?
Federally, no. The children's fitness tax credit ended years ago. Manitoba still has its own fitness tax credit for children and young adults in eligible physical activity programs. It's non-refundable, so it only trims Manitoba tax you'd otherwise owe. Ask the gym for a receipt with the participant's name and the amount paid, and check your own province's tax package each spring.
What happens after a head knock at an Ontario gym?
If the gym trains athletes for competition and has younger members, Rowan's Law sets the rules. The gym needs a removal-from-sport protocol for anyone suspected of a concussion, and a return-to-sport protocol for coming back. Athletes confirm they've reviewed concussion awareness material, and parents confirm it for minors. Classes built on basic skills rather than competition fall outside the law, so ask the gym what it does anyway.
How are junior kickboxing classes kept safe?
Juniors should stay on pads, bags and footwork, with any contact light and closely watched. The gym decides whether coaches need a vulnerable sector check. A coach gets one through the local police, or the Criminal Records Review Program in British Columbia. Ask who on staff has one, whether a second adult is always on the floor, and where parents can sit during class.
